Shine Lawyers has tied with Telstra to win the national ‘Gender Equity in the Workplace’ Award at the Australian Human Resources Institute’s 2012 Diversity Awards lunch in Melbourne today.
The Australian Human Resource Institute (AHRI) nominated Shine Lawyers as the only law firm in the category this year, after Shine achieved outstanding results including a 67 per cent female representation at executive level.
Other achievements included a high level of gender representation across all levels of the organisation, adopting flexible working practices and a strong program of training and development to promote gender equity within the organisation.
Shine CEO Jodie Willey said Shine was honoured to have received the award and recognised as a leader in gender equity, especially in an industry that has traditionally struggled to embody the values of gender equality.

It is not often that one gets the opportunity to sit in the same room as the household name, Erin Brockovich, but if you work for Shine Lawyers, the chances are greatly improved.
I was lucky enough to hear Erin speak at the Qld Law Society Symposium last weekend. She was the guest speaker at the breakfast and as soon as she started to speak, she had the room full of delegates completely mesmerised. She was engaging, entertaining and the strength of her conviction as an environmental activist was palpable. At the conclusion of Erin’s speech, delegates crowded around her trying to get a photo, or an autograph, or simply to share their own personal stories with her.
A Gympie East State School student has won the Shine Lawyers ‘Essay to Erin’ Competition meeting with the real Erin Brockovich on the weekend to talk about protecting the environment.
Year 7 student Jacob Ryan won the competition with his essay entitled ‘Save Our World’ in which he wrote about the Great Barrier Reef becoming a ‘desolate wasteland of bleached coral and rubbish strewn waters’ if we failed to do more to protect it.
